Academy Grads Shoot for the Olympics The US National Team begins play this Sunday in the Pan Am Games against the Dominican Replublic. There is a strong military presence on the roster, including Justin Key a 2009 graduate of West Point. Also on the team are two Air Force Academy graduates Carsen Chung (2009) and Danny Kimmich (2007). Alex Mullin (West Point, 2007) was named to the team as an alternate.

Black Takes Second; Mullane Leading Scorer
Team News - West Point Men's Team HandballThe final game of the weekend saw West Point Black lose by 3 to Celtique de Montreal in the First Annual Thanksgiving Tournament (Tournoi Action de Grâce) in Montreal. It was a strong game for Black after falling behind 6-0 in the opening minutes. We took the lead by half-time and still led by the middle of the second half. A series of 2-minute penalties and the experience of Celtique put the game out of reach. At one point we played at a man disadvantage for 6 minutes out of a 7 1/2 minute stretch. For the weekend, we were 3 -1, defeating Boston, Levis, and Champlain before losing to Celtique, 31-28. Firstie Jared Mullane earned top-scorer honors and Cow Kristian Schott played his best games yet in the goal.

Gold Makes Strong Progress Team News - West Point Men's Team HandballThe Gold team made huge improvements that we just could not cash in for a victory. We lost all four games (to the same four opponents as Black). The final game was a two-goal lost to a very strong Boston game. Many individuals stood out for Gold including Yearling Drew College who anchored the defense and played a strong pivot all weekend. Gold plays next in Colorado Springs against the Air Force Academy on November 4th.
Next Up: Chicago - October 28-30th
Army Black will travel to Chicago on October 28 for the Michael Lipov Memorial Cup, hosted by Chicao Inter Team Handball Club. Last year we placed second, losing to NY Athletic Club in the finals. We're working hard to better our results this year. We will play twice on Friday (at 2 PM and 8 PM), twice on Saturday (at 12:20 PM and 3:50 PM), and once on Sunday, depending on earlier results.
Season Starts on Saturday in Montreal On Thursday, "Coach E", former coach Colonel Mike Endres spoke to the team about his 1998 team success, some stories of his former players, and just life in general. The current team connected immediately with him and look to carry his wisdom into the new season... which starts tomorrow! October 8 and 9 will mark the first official event of the 2011-2012 season Team News - West Point Men's Team Handballwith the Tournoi Action de Grâce (English: Thanksgiving Tournament) in Montreal. At 8:30 AM on Saturday West Point Gold will face Celtique of the Quebec league, followed immediately by West Point Black facing Boston for the first of many times in 2011-2012. The two-day tournament will give both of our teams some great competition early in the season. Black is nearing game-ready condition after six weeks of hard work. Gold will look to climb the steep learning curve as at least six players will play in their first-ever handball game. On Tuesday we played a full 60-minute intra-squad scrimmage and scored over 75 goals in a fast paced game. Shown here is Firstie Geoff Ranowsky scoring for Gold.

Second Annual Homecoming Game: Cadets Win by Two For the second year in a row, Army Handball hosted an Alumni vs. Cadets Game on the Friday of Homecoming weekend. Both years the rosters were heavy on the 10-year reunion class, with a few handball players from other classes rounding out the roster. Once again the Alumni lost in a close contest, but no one was too disappointed. This year we had two standouts from the class of 1991 lead the way, Vic Lindenmeyer (who looked like he played on the 2011 team) and Jeff Gabel (the most physical grad on the court). Team News - West Point Men's Team HandballWith a lineup full of members of the class of 2001, shouts of “Strokes” and “B-Duncs” made it seem as if Coach Negin or Coach E was patrolling the sideline. Players from that class included Mike “Strokes” Gilmartin (who can still score on 12 meter jump shots), Major Brian Duncan (who definitely married up), Major Pete Exline (who played a solid game in the goal), Captain Chris Gonzalez (who was solid from either wing or back), and Major Tony Wrice (currently the women’s team coach). Current men’s team coaches Captain Harry Terzic (in DPE) and Major Mike Tilton (’00) rounded out the roster giving the BLACK team a few subs. Major Sean Morrow (who showed up late after teaching last-hour class wearing Class Bs) and Chris Catron (bum knee) made up the coaching staff. Notice in the picture that the only alumni that crossed the aisle to stand with the youth is the current coach. Other "historical" photos" of many of these alumni can be found on our team website. Of course a brief post-game tailgate was in order, as well as the annual discussion about how we need to get a Knight Air team together this year. Next year, we’ll be leaning on members of the Class of 2002 to carry the load. All alumni in town that weekend are welcome to join us! Mark your calendars for October 12th, 2012!

Season Schedule
The rest of the fall semester is highlighted by the Michael Lipov Memorial Cup in Chicago (October 28th to 30th), a trip to the Air Force Academy (November 4th), and a home weekend for the Northeast League on December 2nd and 3rd. The spring semester will feature more tournaments, including the California Cup in Fremont in January, the West Point Invitational in early March, Collegiate Nationals in Richmond, Virginia in April, and Open Nationals in Minneapolis the week before Graduation. Also the black team will play in two other Northeast League weekends in Boston in February and DC in April.

New Season - New Roster Team News - West Point Men's Team HandballAfter a season of success at both College Nationals and Open Nationals, Army Handball kicked off the new academic year with high hopes for the upcoming fall season. Led by captains Greg Ayers ('12) and Mark Conard ('12) the team returned a deep Firstie class including circles Brenden Reber and Joe Clark, backs Eric "Stunna" Jones, Jev Valles, and Geoff Ranowsky, and wing Kevin Rice. Also on Black this semester are also Cows Brian Teaton and Bob Allibone along with the never blinking Kristian Schott in goal. The team is also featuring six new players who will look to contribute including former Army wideout Sean Boyle and two new goalies ready to be molded under the tutelage of coach and former goalie Major Mike Tilton. The coaching staff has expanded significantly, too. Captain Harry Terzic has joined the DPE team and is helping at practice. Major Sean Morrow has brought his National Team Experience to practice and has made impacts on our circles. Rounding out the staff are Major Lee Evans (Math) and Major George Aubert (TAC).

It's been quite a week for Jack. Over the weekend he was named MVP of the USATH College Nationals by leading WP Gold to the finals and on Tuesday, he was awarded the Coach K Teaching Character Through Sport award. Go Jack! This marks the second time in four years that the award went to an Army Handballer as Jonathan Harmeling received the award in 2007.

Jason & his caddie get into the Sosh Run spirit
It was a beautiful day for a Sosh Run yesterday. So nice that Jason decided to tee-off on his paper. Special thanks to his caddie, Andy "Fluff" Theising, and to Kristian Schott for working the crowd control. Rickey Royal was actually turning his in with only minutes to spare and said that he was on his way back to the barracks for some much needed rack time. Check out all the sosh run action at this link.

The guys cross train with our National Champion Judo team
On Tuesday 30 March, our guys trained judo with West Point's Judo club, which recently defeated San Jose State for the USA Judo Collegiate National title in College Station, Texas. Our guys gained an appreciation for the toughness and warrior spirit displayed in the art of Judo. To see all the photos from our training, check out this link. We're returning the favor to the Judo team when we get them out on the handball court on Thursday, 1 April (no fools!). Video of the guys judo fighting can be found here.

Headed out West Once Again
Mom's & dads who live out west, we're headed to Colorado Springs for the Falcon Cup which starts Friday night. The schedule should be posted on Monday. We hope to sell all who can make it out there and pray for good traveling weather!

Team placing gear order
Our team is placing an order soon (~20 Feb) for team gear items such as shirts, sweats, and hats. If you are interested in getting in on the order, please contact CDT Adam Moore, or just email me and I'll get you in touch with him.

Many thanks to all the Moms and Dads who helped out this weekend
We had a great weekend of handball and fellowship between the teams and the parents and families. Many players had their parents at the event, some traveling from down South and out West. Thanks so much to the "local" parents who worked so hard try to keep the guys feed, which is hard to do. Special thanks to Mrs. Giordano and Durso and Mr. Flynn for cooking up the delicious ribs on site. Many parents chipped in with help and support as well and we say a big thank you to them all. We also had great support from cadets and members of the West Point staff and faculty.

MAJ Habhab returns to help out at the WPI
Former head coach MAJ Travis Habhab and his wife will be on hand this weekend at the tournament to help out with the Gold squad as I can't be two places at once and run the tournament! Major thanks to him and Tara for taking the time to come back to USMA and help out the team. Also, we are a go for selling refreshments to the other teams. The guys are doing this and I don't want the mom's to feel obligated to help with this in any way. This does not preclude moms from bringing food and beverage for our own players, as you have always so generously done. We'll have at least one player at all times manning the concessions table on the 2nd floor landing by the juice bar (with the exception of 1100 when both teams play at the same time). If any moms want to help cover that particular shift, it would really help out.

Goats beat the Engineers at Sloppy Daly Field
Three of our Firsties: Tim Flynn, Greg Durso, & Dexter Wise played in the annual Goat-Engineer football game Wednesday night the 9th of Dec. At a sloppy Daly Field, the Goats were victorious over our three Engineers (who said handball players weren't smart?). The guys gave it a good effort and that score was close until the end. Way to go fellas. See all the photos of the game action at: http://gallery.me.com/avhodges#100063

Last Home Event of the Semester 5 December
Our last home game(s) of the fall semester will be at Arvin starting at 1000 on 5 December. Just the Black team will be playing, but due to injuries, some Gold players may get a chance to step up and log some minutes. We again have the 2nd floor landing reserved and we were able to secure the 2nd floor gym as our court, so no having to walk up 2 flights of stairs to see the guys play! Gold players will be on hand to assist the score table duties as well, so there will be lots of hungry handball players to feed. Mrs. Gio is taking the lead as usual, so mom's shoot her an email or give her or my wife a call. Our home email is: avhodges@mac.com if you want to shoot her a note. We hope to see you all for a great afternoon of team handball.

Jack Gibson leads H1 to Company Athletic Football Championship
Firstie Circle Jack Gibson was a combination of Roger Staubach and Troy Polamalu on Monday night, playing ever down as the Quarter Back and Free Safety for the H1 Roothawgs as they took on the Gamecocks of company C3 in the Brigade Company Athletics football championship. In a tight game early where they fell behind 6-0 at the half, Jack took over in the 2nd half, with two interceptions, one for a score, and two long rushing touchdowns, Jack scored all three of H1's TDs and had some crushing hits on defense. Way to go Jack!

October Has Been Busy
We've been very busy the last few weeks. This weekend we get a break during the Halloween weekend, then we head out west to Colorado to take on the Air Force Academy Falcons on Friday 6 Nov. We look forward to seeing all the families who can make the game. Admission will be free and the games will be played in the "central cadet gymnasium".

Also, check out our new "promotional video", featuring highlights from our last two tournaments in NC and Chicago:

Will is Doing Well

Thanks to all the parents and family who have lent their support and prayers to Will Schuh and his family. Will is doing well following surgery and is spending the weekend on pass recovering with his family. Thank again to all!

First Event of the Year Complete
Thanks to all who came out and supported us this last weekend. Special thanks to the mom's who provided chow and cheers!

My wife took a few brief video clips and photos, which I strung together here. We'll take more next month in North Carolina, so stay tuned!

Mark Ortega leads practice
Men's national team center back and professional team handballer (SC Pullheim in Germany) Mark Ortega joined the team this week for practice. He helped out both the men's and women's programs, working consecutive practices for three straight days. He also held smaller one-on-one clinics during the early afternoon for available and interested players.

First Competition of the Year: 26 September at Arvin Gymnasium.

Families, we'll kick off the season with a home "mini-tourney" where we play round robin style against New York City Team Handball and the New England Freeze Handball Club. Games will start at 1210 and run continuously until about 1800. If you are interested in volunteering to bring some food or drinks for the guys to eat between matches, that would be much appreciated. Please contact myself or my wife, Valerie, at "avhodges@mac.com" or 845-839-0091 so that we/she can coordinate the efforts. We are not supposed to bring the food or drink into the 4th floor gym, but we are allowed to have it on the 2nd floor landing by the wresting room where the "juice bar" is. We'll play the games on the 4th floor gym while the 2nd floor is under reconstruction. We look forward to seeing all who can come support our opening effort of the season! The tentative schedule is:
Time Team 1 Team 2
1210 Black NYC
1320 Gold NE
1430 NYC Gold
1540 NE Black
1650 NYC NE

Firstie's take the IOCT and APFT
Some of our senior cadets took their annual physical fitness evaluations this last week. Will Schuh tore up the IOCT and all our Firsties took the APFT. As a DPE Instructor, I was grading both events, so I didn't get any photos of the APFT, but I was able to get one of my colleagues to snap these photos of Will on the IOCT rope. Actually, that's me in the bottom left corner of the left most photo (back to the camera).
